PUERTO RICO--The St. Maarten Judo Team won five gold medals, a silver and took a fourth place at the International Judo Championships in San Juan.
Four of the St. Maarten fighters won all their matches by Ipon, the throwing of the opponent on their back with speed and control. Taking gold by Ipon were Kimani Olivacce, Shakira Gijsbertha and Guilluene Richards in the youth competition and Michealangelo Bell in the adult tournament.
Kerby Richardson won a gold medal in the Junior division and silver in the adult group, while Richinel Brug finished fourth in the adults.
"This event was considered as an evaluation test for the judo team," said Aartwichgt Bell, who overseas the team's training. "The team has shown great improvement, but is still lacking hard conditioning."
The judo team is one of the St. Maarten National teams that rely on the help of the High-Performance Sports Lab to ensure good results at international competitions. Not only does the Lab help sport organizations develop and institute training programs and provide a gym for conditioning, it also helps generate funds to enable local athletes to have top training.
The judo team's trip to Puerto Rico was sponsored by NAGICO and Checkmate Security Services.
