Kenny Florian vs Gray Maynard Possible for UFC Boston Event in August

Update: The Boston Herald is now posting that the fight between Kenny Florian and Gray Maynard should not have been reported. No reason was given as to why the publication has posted this update, but it looks like they may have jumped the gun on what is just a rumor at the moment.

With Frankie Edgar shaking up the UFC lightweight division this past weekend en route to his shocking upset victory over champion BJ Penn, it appears that the organization will be setting up a title eliminator bout with Kenny Florian to take on Gray Maynard at the upcoming UFC fight card for the city of Boston, Massachusetts in the month of August with the likely possibility that Edgar and Penn will be squaring off in a rematch from the UFC 112 event in Abu Dhabi, UAE.

ESPN “MMA Live” host Jon Anik broke out the rumor of the potential Florian vs Maynard bout as The Boston Herald has also reported that the fight is in the works for the August 28 event as well, but has since recanted the statement as bout agreements are yet to be signed at this time.

Believing that he was next for a shot at the UFC lightweight championship, Gray Maynard (9-0) edged a split decision win over Nate Diaz this past January at UFC Fight Night 20 in a very lackluster affair which many may feel that Diaz should have won the fight as well.

Since then, UFC President Dana White deemed ‘The Bully’ not ready for a title shot as the opportunity was awarded to Frankie Edgar as you see the end result as ‘The Answer’ is the new champion at 155 pounds.

Meanwhile Kenny Florian (13-4) has won his last two fights following a lightweight title loss to BJ Penn last August as Florian has defeated the likes of Clay Guida at UFC 107 last December and most recently former PRIDE champion Takanori Gomi at UFC Fight Night 21 with both wins coming via submission as ‘KenFlo’ is a winner in 8 of his last 10 fights with the other loss coming in another lightweight championship fight against Sean Sherk way back at UFC 64 in October of 2006.

This fight would definitely be for the right to become number one contender to the title, but will it be the first time for Gray Maynard or will Kenny Florian get his third crack at finally becoming a champion?
