Alan Belcher vs. Demian Maia expected for UFC Fight Night 22

Earlirer this week, rising middleweight contender Alan Belcher voiced his desire to take a step up in competition and face the top middleweights in the UFC, targeting match ups with Vitor Belfort and former UFC middleweight title contender Demian Maia.

It appears Belcher got what he asked for, as he and Maia have verbally agreed to meet at UFC Fight Night 22 in September, according to MMA Fighting.

Belcher (16-6) is 4-1 in his last five bouts, which includes a current two fight winning streak. He most recently scored a second-round submission win over Patrick Cote at UFC 113 earlier this month. His rear-naked choke submission win over Cote earned him an extra $65,000, as he was awarded the "Submission of the Night" fight night bonus.

Belcher has put together a solid 7-4 record with the UFC since debuting with the promotion in August 2006, scoring other notable Octagon wins over Wilson Gouveia, Jorge Santiago, Ed Herman and Denis Kang. His other UFC losses have came against Yushin Okami, Kendall Grove, Jason Day and Yoshihiro Akiyama.

Maia (12-2) is 1-2 in his last three bouts, most recently suffering a unanimous decision loss to Anderson Silva in a UFC middleweight title fight in the main event of last month's UFC 112 event. He previously defeated Dan Miller at UFC 109 in February.

Maia now sports a 6-2 UFC record, picking up wins in his first five UFC bouts, all by submission, over Ryan Jensen, Ed Herman, Jason MacDonald, Nate Quarry and Chael Sonnen. His only other UFC and career loss came against Nate Marquardt at UFC 102.

The as-of-yet unannounced UFC Fight Night 22 event is expected to take place on September 15, with an exact location and venue yet to be determined. The event will likely serve as the lead-in for Spike TV's debut episode of The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) season 12.

The only other rumored bout set to take place at UFC Fight Night 22 is a lightweight fight between Jim Miller and Gleison Tibau.
