While Jon Jones can count many of the biggest names in our sport as fans, another name can be added, worlds number 1 lightheavyweight and newly crowned champion Mauricio Rua. Shogun took time out of his celebrations after winning the gold this past Saturday night against previously undefeated Lyoto Machida, to give his opinion on the top ten lightheavyweight, Jon Jones.
Speaking to sherdog.com, Rua had this to say about Jones:
“He is a great young fighter, too damn good, and he’s coming with everything in our division. He is very good in wrestling. I think he and Cain Velasquez are the two guys with the best wrestling in MMA today, together with Georges St. Pierre. He’s a very good wrestler, very dangerous. He’s a guy who will give a lot of people trouble.”
Jones next bout is against Vladimir Matyushenko, and will take place on August 1st, once again headlining a UFC: On Versus card. He is currently 10-1 since making quick work of Brandon Vera in march. Vera suffered a broken orbital bone due to a viciously effictive elbow from Jones.
As for Rua, he seems to have overcame the dip in form which saw him in a lacklustre bout against Mark Coleman, followed by a loss to Forrest Griffin.Since then, we have seen him return to a form not seen since his pride days, with a ko win over the Iceman, followed by his pair of matches against Lyoto Machida. He now rests comfortably on top of the pile in UFC, with his first defence expected to be against Rashad Evans or a rematch with Rampage Jackson.
