Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Ace Fabricio "Vai Cavalo" Werdum discussed his upcoming fight against "The Last Emperor" Fedor Emelianenko, and the possibility of fighting the UFC Heavyweight Champion Brock Lesnar sometime in the future. Werdum and Fedor will go to war against each other in a non-title contest on June 26th, at the HP Pavilion in San Jose, California. Here is what Werdum had to say abou the "uneasy task" of beating Fedor Emelianenko:
"I’ve been studying a lot his game, I’ve been watching his fights. It’s difficult for an athlete to change completely his game plan in a year, he basically does the same things, so we already know Fedor has a heavy hands, is strong and fast… I’ll do what I do best and try to make my Jiu-Jitsu work, but I also have to worry about the standing game because the fight begins with the two of us standing, so I have to prepare myself for everything, because a good punch on the heavyweight division can determine the winner so I have to worry about this, but so does he.
I can’t say much about him, he’s the champion for about eight years, so beating a guy from his level is not an easy task. I don’t know if will be a belt dispute and, of course I’d like to become the champion and have the belt, but I’m more concerned about beating Fedor, because it’s more important to me than bringing five belts home."
Speaking about Alistair Overeem and Brock Lesnar, Fabricio Werdum had nothing but respect for the two Heavyweights. Werdum defeated the Golden Glory Gym product more than four years ago at 'Pride Total Elimination Absolute, but the Brazilian feels that "The Demolition Man" is a much better fighter today. As for Lesnar, "Vai Cavalo" declared that he would love to test his skills against the former WWE Superstar after June 26th:
"Alistair Overeem has improved a lot and every fight is different. I don’t know if people saw our fight on Pride where, on the first round, he hit me a lot, with punches, knees, kicks, brought me down five times… On the second round, because I was more conditioning I improved and I submit him with a kimura. But I don’t think of fighting against him. I think about maybe fighting against Fedor again or maybe a bout against UFC’s champion, a super fight, so I could fight against Brock Lesnar... I will have to get big for that fight; I will have to get really huge (laughs).
My current weight is 240 pounds. I would like to keep myself in that region, because if I don’t want to feel too slow. I have to be in my top shape when it comes to speed and endurance."
Fabricio Werdum is currently 13-4-1 in his Mixed Martial Arts campaign, with notable victories over Gabriel Gonzaga, Aleksander Emelianenko, Alistair Overeem, Brandon Vera and most recently Antonio "Bigfoot" Silva. Black Belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Judo, Werdum stands at 6 ft 4 inches (1.93 m) tall, with 76-inch reach (2 inches more than Fedor Emelianenko).
