In what was his biggest test by far inside the Octagon, young undefeated British welterweight faced off against Diego Sanchez in the opening bout of the UFC 114 main card as the ‘Nightmare’ returns to the 170 pound weight class after failing to take home the UFC lightweight championship as he starts his ascent of the welterweight division once again, but things did not go as planned for the Ultimate Fighter season 1 winner.
From the start of the bell to the closing bell, Hathaway had a great gameplan for Sanchez as he used his reach to his full advantage as Hathaway used his jab and a solid knee strike to put a hurting on Sanchez early to gain control throughout the fight.
Sanchez who normally starts very strong seemed to not have it as he tried to get in on Hathaway to make some damage happen, but was unsuccessful as Hathaway was able to counter, stuff the takedown attempts and come in and attack whenever he had the opening.
The judges gave all rounds to the 22 year old and even scoring a 10-8 third round as John ‘The Hitman’ Hathaway comes away with the a big win in the UFC and will be up against tougher competition from here on in.
